Shohei Ohtani, Angels, played a real two-way game, pitching and batting. As a pitcher, he pitched 8 innings, allowing only 2 run by solo homes, getting 10 strikeouts, but he did not get his 10th win. As a batter, no hits and 2 walks.
Ohtani, pitching on his home field for the first time since September 4th, had good control, speed, and breaking ball. However, he gave up two solo home runs in the 3rd and 4th inning on a high, sweet pitch.
Angels batting line was unable to catch Trivino, the starter of the Athletics, and stranded zero runs until the 8th inning.
They scored two runs in the ninth inning to catch up, and Otani's loss disappeared, but they eventually gave up a run in the tenth inning and lost the game 2-3.
In the 8th inning, Ohtani's control was a bit lacking due to fatigue and loaded the bases, but he threw a strong pitch and got a short fly out of the 5th batter, Lauri, then struck out Chapman who gave up a home run in his first appearance 3 years ago and two-base hit and homerun today. He finished the day with two runs for eight innings.
His split balls, which were a major issue in his last appearance, were much better today, accounting for 50% of his pitches, and were the driving force behind his 10 strikeouts.
Also, his right arm, which was complaining of tightness after his last appearance, was not affected at all.
He is expected to pitch only one or two more games, but a double digit homers and wins is highly anticipated in his next appearance.
